2020 Volvo XC40 vs 2019 Volvo XC40

Serving Bend, OR

The Volvo XC40 is a luxury subcompact SUV model that has been in production since 2017 (for the 2018 model year). This new model is still in its first generation, so the model hasn’t undergone much change since its introduction. The only notable difference between the 2019 Volvo XC40 and the 2020 Volvo XC40 is the removal of standard leather seats and power-folding rear seats. Still, the 2020 Volvo XC40 ranks third in its class, according to US News.

The standard engine for both the 2020 Volvo XC40 and 2019 Volvo XC40 is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that is capable of producing a maximum output of 187 horsepower. Both model years also feature a variant of the same 2.0-liter engine that is capable of producing a maximum output of 248 horsepower. Regardless of which engine you choose, this model is zippy and can pass on highways with no issue.

The standard engine for the Volvo XC40 is only slightly more fuel-efficient than its variant. The standard 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine averages roughly 23 city miles per gallon and 33 highway miles per gallon. The 248-horsepower 2.0-liter variant engine averages around 22 city miles per gallon and 30 highway miles per gallon. Both engines hover right around the fuel economy average for the luxury SUV class.

The Volvo XC40 boasts a high-end, exterior that is beautiful, as is to be expected from a luxury automaker. The 2019 Volvo XC40 with standard leather upholstery has been touted as one of the best interiors of its class, for the price. However, the 2020 model year XC40 will no longer have standard leather upholstery, which many view as a step down from the previous year. None-the-less, the Volvo XC40’s design is sleek and more than satisfactory for the worth of the model.

Volvo’s reputation has long been spearheaded by the company’s focus on passenger safety, and the 2019 and 2020 Volvo XC40 are no exceptions. Both models come standard with Volvo’s City Safety Features. These features include driver warning systems for other vehicles, pedestrians, or animals. Additionally, Volvo’s City Safety Features include automated emergency braking, parking assist, automated driver assistance technology, and rear emergency braking. The IIHS selected the 2019 Volvo XC40 as a top safety pick, and similar results are to be expected for the 2020 model year.

Both model years feature a loaded infotainment system with a standard nine-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, navigation, and a WiFi hotspot. Available features for the XC40 include dual-zone climate controls and a premium sound system.
